Those of you, who still hang around people from Poland, might notice, that there is one topic Polish people tend to talk about recently with increased involvement. That topic is 'Elections in Poland'. Some time ago Distant presented the political situation in Poland to you. The situation got only worse since than, and resulted in early elections to Polish Parliment. If you want to be at least slightly possible to understand what are we talking about, check out the web service Finacial Times prepared about our elections. I especially recommend the Q&A and Who is Who sections:

I remember the post where you and Distant discussed this whole situation.. it seemed quite bad and now that you're saying it's worse... =\

I've read the sections you suggested and I've got to say, it seems you guys are pretty screwed... Though it seems to me that the people likely to win are the worst, hope I'm not offending anyone or am misinformed, but that's the opinion I've drawn. I don't trust for one family to be president and PM at the same time, plus the name of their party just reminds me of the book 1984.. And the position of getting away from communism, while making a "secret police force answerable only to the PM"... gee, I think I heard of a guy who made something like that.. oh, right. I hope I'm not the only one that finds this supid. Plus a government being run by the ultra religious never ends well.

Whenever I see something on the news about a country with someone I know in it, I read it.. Hope everything works out, and that I didn't say anything stupid.

today i saw something vague about the former president (PM? perhaps..) negatively commenting on the brothers in power atm in belgian national news channel, nothing seemed wrong lawl.

i need some local blog to see what really is going on (i frequently read belgian news reporters' in russia/USA/... blogs - very interesting to see what is going on in countries that no one ever reports about in national tv channels...)

the "who is who" doesnt clear things up much for me, is there any more elaborate/enlightning site/blog/whatever that i could read/follow? this seems most interesting actuality to me.

edit: apparently elections are coming next week, so the same site would report extensively on events? i will be following it =] during meals/breaks at work/insomnia/whenever!

Actually, it's this sunday, I even got a free day from my college to go and vote :) I find it quite funny, because it's the first time after '89 that many people won't vote for anyone - rather against current government. I certainly will, seeing that 'liberalism' is more like a swear word for our politics, and none actually openly admits being one. :/

Yeah, Distant and I discussed this on WoW the other day, he said he was going to go vote this weekend to, and most people I've talked about this too seem to have the same plan as Irian. Good luck on your elections!

Just to make this discussion complete - the elections were won by Citizen Platform, though they did not manage to get enough votes to form a government alone. They are currently discussing a coalition with Polish Peasant Party (PSL).

PSL is a rather interesting party. First of all, this is the oldest party currently participating in Polish political life - its roots go back as far as 100 years. This is very unique to Polish political scene, where most of the parties didn't exist 6 years ago. Moreover, even though it is called Peasant Party, it has the highest number of people with high education, even above PhD level. Their leader - Waldemar Pawlak, is supposed to be a very demanding coalition partner for Donald Tusk (PO leader). Yet, so far they seem to go well in their agreements.

As far as you might remember - current Polish president is still from Law and Justice party (PiS) which was the major competitor for PO in current elections. It lead to some really wired situations already, as Polish president seems to have taken offense with PO at them winning the elections...

So all in all, we do live in interesting times.

As a bonus - exact results for Polish elections. They are in Polish language, but in graphical form, so its easy to understand them. The parties are - Citizen Platform (PO), Law and Justice (PiS), The Left and Democrates (LiD), Polish Peasant Party (PSL), Self-defense Party (Samoobrona), Polish Families League (LPR) and Polish Labour Party (PPP). The chart to the very right shows number of parliament members and senate members.
